Program Descriptions
Martial arts training is the perfect activity for children of all ages. It instills confidence, teaches discipline, and will have your child break a sweat with a smile. First and foremost, we teach our students how to defend themselves. Our training also helps students thrive outside the academy by applying the problem-solving skills and positive values such as humility, discipline, and purpose of jiu jitsu.
Little Sharks (ages 5-7):
For our youngest students, we limit the variety of moves taught and focus on core techniques and positions. We use partner drills and games to keep our younger students engaged and active. We want to keep them moving and help them develop muscle memory and situational awareness.
Students also learn the three “T”s of self-defense: Talk, Tell, and Tackle. We teach our young students how to peacefully handle conflict with their words as a first option. In fact, we give them specific phrases and a body language to respond to common bullying behaviors. If talking is not enough, we advise students to tell an adult about the situation. Only when all other options have been exhausted, or physical violence is imminent, do we teach students to tackle and to use their jiu jitsu. Sometimes in life, the fight picks you, and there is no other choice but to defend yourself.
Goals:
- Improve coordination and movement;
- Instill positive values including confidence and self discipline; and
- Develop the student's self-defense fundamentals such as takedowns, positions, and transitions.
Little Sharks classes include:
- A 10-minute animal movement warm up;
- Standing distance management with a takedown;
- Ground technique training (pins, escapes, sweeps, and submissions);
- Scrambling games;
- Controlled grappling matches or "rumbling"; and
- A closing game.
Juniors (ages 8-13):
Our classes grow and evolve with our students. In the Juniors classes, much more time and focus are placed on drilling compared to the younger Little Sharks students. This additional level of discipline allows us to show a greater variety of moves and techniques as we dive deeper into the realities of defending against more aggressive opponents.
The three “T”s of self defense - Talk, Tell, and Tackle - continue to be emphasized, along with conversations about leadership, teamwork, and camaraderie. At Rising Tide Academy, we care just as much about fostering great martial artists as we do about fostering great individuals.
